Down with the Ego! Down with the Ego!
(Why do you say that?)
I do not know. Many people say it nowadays.

Regardless of the valid points brought about in this article, I have a different understanding of what the word "phantasmagoria" refers to in the section of the 1958 letter below:
"And in the Third Millennium the time comes when big parts of the continents disappear and the people will have to flee to the mountains, yet their sense of the catastrophes will only be of short duration, because they will forget everything again quickly and therefore make an effort to do much rebuilding, because they are already creating phantasmagoria, through movies and television, as well as later through a worldwide netting of computers and electronics, through which they deceive themselves and see things that do not exist, and are only visually determined for the eye, subsequently their sense for reality disappears and they can no longer distinguish between reality and fiction, whereby they lose themselves more and more in the labyrinth of life, while those who produce phantasms commercially as well as religious and sectarian phantasms, have an easy game with the people of faith, who they deceive in every possible manner and make them into humble beings, like cringing dogs."
It seems most obvious to me that "phantasmagoria" refers to tridimensional computer graphics. And I think that as time moves on, this meaning will become more and more obvious to everyone. We already have fictional worlds, "created only for the eye" in movies like Avatar, but these take weeks for hundreds of computers to render (making the final images based on all the defined parameters). We have virtual worlds that we can collectively interact with in real time from our computers, with "Second Life" or some online games. There are things like Farmville, just another example of owning and working for unsubstantial things. Just throw all this together and in a couple of decades, with super-fast Internet, almost limitless processing power and higher resolution displays, and many more users will be seduced by these ultra realistic worlds that everyone can access, by their achievements and their experiences in the unsubstantial. Especially as population grows and relationships become even more impersonal. And some of "those who produce phantasms commercially" (who create virtual worlds, virtual objects and entities of every kind) will surely gain great influence and become known by everyone in the world. I don't see how exactly "religious and sectarian phantasms" fits in this scenario but I have always imagined that people would isolate themselves more and more from the world around them and for this reason, they wouldn't even care much if they had to be displaced due to floods and the rising of the sea, because they would still count with their virtual worlds where they "lived" in and where they had their creations, acquisitions and acquaintances in that realm.

I think that is a correct interpretation of what they are saying thanks DavidG.

This goes into the "EGO" level of thinking. Paint your own picture through visual, audio, publications, although you are truly not that person in your everyday life. Everything is like an advertisement. Once we learn that these are for egomaniacs and there kind and find the true ability and capability within each of ourselves we are lambs following the sheep universal remote controller. If Earth and it's people like to be controlled upon request continue on your way to oblivion. A balloon can only inflate to a certain level before imploding. If you decide to man up and grow up then you will find a vastly changed and responsible world where good around the cosmos gravitate towards only the genuine. :)
